The Living Heritage of Shiwan Kiln Art
Shiwan ceramic art is a story of fire and clay told over a thousand years. Located at the confluence of the Pearl River Delta, the Shiwan district of Foshan became one of southern China's greatest ceramic hubs, feeding not only domestic demand but also maritime trade routes to Southeast Asia and beyond. Today the craft is recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (2006), and its master artisans are honored as inheritors of this living tradition.
What sets Shiwan ceramics apart is the tradition of hand-molded figurines. Unlike thrown or cast wares, many Shiwan pieces are shaped directly by hand in wet clay — a technique called tie-su (贴塑, applied modeling) — building up robes, beards, expressions and even the fine texture of fabric strand by strand. Master craftsmen work without molds for the finest figures, giving each piece subtle, unrepeatable character.
Shiwan is also celebrated for its green-glazed figures and its mastery of glaze chemistry. The famous Shiwan green glaze, fired at controlled temperatures, produces a deep, lustrous celadon-green finish that has become a signature of the kiln. Figure subjects range from the arhats (luohan) and bodhisattvas of Buddhist tradition, to the Eight Immortals, historical heroes, children at play, and folk-life scenes that capture Guangdong's everyday culture.
Because Shiwan figurines are handmade heritage crafts, each piece carries the artisan's hand — slight variations in glaze, posture and expression are part of their value, not a defect. This authentic handmade quality is exactly what makes them distinctive as collectible art, cultural gifts and premium home décor in global markets.
By working directly with heritage workshops and master artisans, INFINITE TOMATO helps preserve this intangible cultural heritage while making it accessible to the world.
